Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder involving chronic pain in your muscles, ligaments and tendons.

It is also characterized by unrefreshing sleep.

It is a chronic condition.

In 1990 the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) identified specific criteria for fibromyalgia. The ACR classifies a patient with fibromyalgia if at least 11 of 18 specific areas of your body are painful under pressure. Those specific areas are shown in the diagram above. Also, you must have had widespread pain lasting at least 3 months.

What are the symptoms for Fibromyalgia?

They include widespread aching, stiffness in muscles and soft tissues and fatigue. Pain is felt around the neck, shoulders, upper back, elbows, lower back and hips.

While the cause of Fibromyalgia is unknown, it is a common disorder, affecting approximately two percent of the U.S. population. It occurs seven times more frequently in women than in men.
