 KEEPING AN EYE ON NUTRITION

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in the US with over 15 million people currently diagnosed with the condition. While it is believed that one in three Americans will be affected by the disease, there are ways in which you can protect your vision.

A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that you can significantly lower your risk of AMD by eating foods that are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. By making some simple changes in your diet, you can ensure that you are getting enough of these important bioflavonoids.

Lutein is found in high quantities in spinach and other leafy green vegetables, such as kale and collard greens. It is also found in egg yolks along with zeaxanthin. Because it is a fat soluble nutrient, you will need to eat your greens with some butter or healthy oil (such as olive oil) in order to absorb the lutein.

Adding more berries to your diet is another way to keep your eyes healthy. Blueberries, bilberries and cranberries contain additional bioflavonoids, known as anthocyanidins, which have been shown to help prevent AMD through strengthening the capillaries in the eye.
