 OBESTIY AND BLINDNESS

obestity and blindness

A recent report from Britain’s Royal National Institute of the Blind states that those who are obese have a significantly greater risk of losing their sight. This increased risk was associated with three main causes of blindness:

AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) - a condition that affects the retina of the eye causing a loss of sharp central vision, contrast sensitivity and color perception. Obesity doubles the risk of AMD.

Diabetic retinopathy - a disease found in may of those with Type II diabetes which leads to a progressive blurring of vision. The chances of acquiring this disease are ten times higher for those who are obese.

Cataracts - a clouding of the eye lens which leads to partial or total loss of sight. According to the International Journal of Obesity, obese individuals face a 30% greater risk of developing this disease.

To safeguard your site as you age it is important to maintain a healthy weight though a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Also take part in some form of regular exercise or use a chi exercise machine. And of course, be sure to get regular eye exams.
