 RELIEF FROM CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Within your wrist there are eight carpal bones which surround the median nerve. The resulting tunnel is just large enough for the nerve and several small tendons. If the tunnel becomes smaller, or the tendons become inflamed, the median nerve is compressed causing pain, numbness and tingling.

There are several factors that can contribute to this condition, although the most common are wrist injury, repetitive movement and frequent vibration from hand tools. Certain diseases can also lead to carpal tunnel syndrome, including arthritis, diabetes and hypothyroidism. If you are female your chances of developing CTS are three times higher, while if you are overweight your risk is doubled.

Fortunately, there is a pleasant effective treatment for this painful condition. The Touch Research Institute in Miami has found massage to be a highly effective means of relieving discomfort and restoring functionality.

The study involved 16 patients with the beginning stages of carpal tunnel syndrome. Half of the group received once weekly professional massages and were instructed to perform self-massage techniques each evening.

In addition to experiencing relief from their symptoms, the massage group was also found to have increased grip strength. As an added bonus they also reported decreased anxiety and depression.

If you or someone you know is suffering from this debilitating condition, massage could be of great help. Learn more about massage and find the right unit for you by clicking on the links.
